A Tribute to
KEITH ROSCOE
by Brian Manning
[RCC Wicket Keeping Record
Holder]
My first sighting of the
legendary "Kes" was when he started playing in
the 1stX1 at Bacup many
years ago. Then he was only a gangling but confident
youth with obvious potential.
He soon saw the errors of his ways and moved to
play for R.C.C.
I always enjoyed keeping
to him and we had untold victims between us.Kes has
become one of the very few
excellent left arm spinners who have graced the League game.
He must have the highest
number of professional victims amongst all amateur bowlers.
He developed a wicked 'arm
ball' which he has used to deadly effect.I always encouraged him
to 'loop the loop' - to
use his slow bowling skills to develope flight & dip which
invariably
brings success.
Kes has a great sense of
humour and a ready wit. He has a very individual style with the
bat
(including a record number
of not outs) and his eccentric fielding skills have endeared him
to players and spectators
alike.
There is always regret when
someone of his capabilities hangs up his boots. His achievement
in joining the exclusive
club of bowlers who have taken 1000+ wickets will stand forever
as a major tribute to this
great bowler and character,as he retires from the game at the
end of the 2008 season.
